Next Thursday the Epiphany of the Lord is celebrated or, as it is commonly known, the Day of the Magi. And for this reason, Orange County authorities have decided to hold an event, which will be broadcast live on Wednesday, January 5, starting at 5:15 pm, on Mayor Jerry Demings’ Facebook page, @OrangeCountyMayor .

During the celebration, a group of foreign dignitaries and leaders will share how this holiday is celebrated in their home countries and what traditions they have to honor such an important date on the Catholic calendar. In addition, there will be traditional music and typical foods.

It was also known that Dr. Luis Martínez-Fernández, a professor at the University of Central Florida, who specializes in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean, will attend.

So if you want to learn a little about the customs and traditions of other countries to celebrate Kings Day, you can enjoy this virtual event with your family next Wednesday, January 5.

Origin of Three Kings Day

The Three Kings Day, also known as the Bajada de Reyes, is celebrated every January 6 in several countries, in order to remember the adoration of the child Jesus by the three Magi.

According to the tradition of the Church, the three Wise Men were called Melchior, Gaspar and Baltasar and each one brought him a special gift for the baby Jesus, who had been born in Bethlehem, according to the Holy Scriptures.

The celebration has its origin in the Gospel of Saint Matthew, which is the only one that mentions the Magi, although it does not say that they were kings, but simply wise men who came from the East to give gifts to the child Jesus.

The Magi, after following a very resplendent star, look for the “King of the Jews who has been born” in Jerusalem, this star guiding them to Jesus born in Bethlehem, and to whom they offer offerings of gold, incense and myrrh.

At present, three gifts are recognized such as: gold (representing his royal nature, as a present conferred to kings), incense (representing his divine nature, used in worship at the altars of God) and myrrh (an embalming compound for the dead, representing the suffering and future death of Jesus).
